Qualifying to Nationals!

Three of RFC's teenage fencers qualified to Summer Nationals at this past weekend's Youth Championships.

Jacob Duell qualified to Under 16 Foil and Youth 14 Foil.
Sid Menon qualified to Under 16 Saber and Youth 14 Saber.
Aravind Menon qualified to Youth 14 Saber.

Sid won Youth 14 saber, and is Virginia Division's Youth 14 Men's Saber Champion!

(Under 16 also qualifies a fencer to Division II and Division III, so Jacob and Sid have already qualified for 4 events in Atlanta.)

Congratulations to all our fencers!

Junior/Youth Practice - Feb 11

A warmup before Junior Olympics for all young fencers. This is not a USFA sanctioned tournament, but everyone is invited!

Top 4 places will get awards! (Maybe medals, maybe something cooler than a medal!)

Richmond Highland Games

Today, we're doing a demo at the Richmond Highland Games & Celtic Festival. No telephone pole tossing for us, just getting muddy in our fencing whites.

Friday, Sue and I finished putting down polyurethane on the floor (unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me) and Chuck built some big shelves, and a weapon rack. More photos in a couple days.

Monday, the first "live" day.

Got to the club today and discovered we hadn't put down the rulebook-required center lines. With a lot of help from Chuck and Sue they got taped out and stained. But the rest of the stain, which should have taken a few hours to dry, isn't dry. So the polyurethane coating will go down on Friday instead of today, assuming the stain is dry by then.

Today we did everything that was left to do. Except the stuff we didn't. $100 of tape and lots of painting. Just look at the pictures, will you, and let me sleep.

Saturday's Work

Today, Saturday, which feels like about 3 months into this project, we did a bunch of stuff. First, moved six thousand pounds of OSB about 6 feet so we could lay out the floor for real. (This means borrowing the pallet jack from our nice neighbor again.) Extended the plastic, laid out the last couple sleepers, finished stapling the 4200 rubber pads (actually we have about 100 left over), shortened the edge rails by 1.5 inches, and nailed in place all the sleepers. Then we started putting OSB in place. Lots and lots of OSB. We named Chuck the Wizard of OSB (pronounced "ahzb"). I told you it feels like this has been going on for months. And the office and bathrooms are painted very nice colors!

Here are photos of todays work. At 10am this morning, which feels like a month ago, we followed the UPS delivery guy down our street, and waved him down to tell him about the "new" address, created by subdividing an old address. We need those 14 boxes of rubber pads he had for us! We completed the cross sleepers including rubber pads and wooden shims in heavy traffic areas, completed all sleepers, including rubber on 1/2 of them. Putting in 16800 staples takes a very long time, even for a half dozen people!

Today I chained and locked shut the door to the next space, swept the floor again, laid down the 6 mil black plastic vapor barrier, and built the left side cross-sleeper. Working by yourself sometimes means you spend 30 minutes constructing the most beautiful thing ever, only to discover it was the wrong thing. It will be better for the next 3 days, with lots of help coming in.

We finally got the keys for our new space, on 3411.5 Carlton St. Here are photos of the space, including the trash and dust left behind. And our beautiful pile of wood for the floor!
